The Protimos Educational Trust seeks new Trustees

The current Trustees are supported by our UK Director based in our London office; we are now seeking two new Trustees to join us from January 2017. 

The Protimos Educational Trust is specifically searching for: 
  • An individual with accounting and finance expertise.
  • An individual with experience at management level within a large charitable organisation or Foundation. 

Being a Trustee of The Protimos Educational Trust

Trustees of the Protimos Educational Trust are independent and active stewards of the Trust’s resources and programmes. It’s a real opportunity to use philanthropy and active engagement to make an impact in the cutting edge space where law meets development. Trustees are an important resource, bringing knowledge, networks and expertise to bear, which is greatly valued by staff and colleagues. 

Expectations of Trustees

We ask for a commitment of 4 (3 hour) board meetings a year, and a half day annual ‘strategic meeting’. This commitment comprises of reading papers and updates from staff; contributing thoughts and ideas; attending board meeting; taking full part in trustee exchanges and discussions; and representing the Trust at events. Board members are appointed on a renewable 3-year term. The Trust has a small team of very committed staff who work closely with the board to further Protimos' aims.

The Protimos Foundation is seeking new Directors

The Protimos Foundation is a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee, whose purpose is to provide legal assistance, education and capacity building to impoverished communities in emerging economies. Founded in 2000 with registered offices in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, South Africa and Lesotho, the Foundation is part of an international network of Protimos organisations, working together to use the rule of law to build mutually beneficial relationships between local communities, governments and the private sector. Protimos works to introduce or improve legal empowerment as a sustainable process for those needing access to the legal process, and those administrating it. 

The Board is supported by our UK Director based in our London office; we are now seeking 3 new directors to join us from January 2017. 

The Protimos Foundation is specifically searching for: 
  • A Treasurer; an individual with accounting and finance expertise.
  • An individual with Human Resources experience who can provide guidance on staff management and recruitment. 
  • An individual with a keen interest in development economics, specifically new economic models such as social impact bonds. 

Being a Director of The Protimos Foundation

Directors of the Foundation act as the active stewards of the Foundation’s resources and programmes. This is a real opportunity to use philanthropy and active engagement to make an impact, at the cutting edge space, where law meets development. The Board is an essential a resource, with its members bringing knowledge, networks and expertise to the oversight and development and operations of the network. 

Our Expectations of Directors 

We ask for a commitment of 4 (3 hour) board meetings/ a year, and an annual ‘away-day’. In addition we ask for 3 days/ quarter to engage with the executive staff relating to your area of expertise. This commitment comprises of reading papers and updates from staff; contributing thoughts and ideas; attending board meeting; taking full part in exchanges and discussions with other members of the Protimos network; and representing the Foundation at events. Board members are appointed on a renewable 3-year term. The Foundation has a small, active and very committed staff that work closely with the board.

Protimos Africa is seeking three Board Members who are proven leaders in their industry with experience with non-profit Boards and knowledge of good governance practices.

Protimos Africa is specifically searching for:
  • 1 person with knowledge of, and experience in, the corporate social investment (CSI) and fundraising environment in South Africa (experience at the international level is desirable);
  • 1 person with Project Development experience in Rule of Law and Sustainable Development Projects in Africa; and
  • 1 person with expertise in Community and Resource Rights and Public Interest Advocacy in Africa.

From the successful candidates, a Treasurer and Secretary shall be appointed.

The positions require:
  • Positive and strong governance experience in an organization, preferably in a complex multi-cultural global organization;
  • Willingness to learn about, and be an ambassador for, the Protimos Africa and the Protimos Global Network;
  • Excellent communication, listening, problem-solving, conflict mediation and negotiations skills;
  • The ability to ask penetrating questions and constructively offer guidance about appropriate processes that lead to timely decision making;
  • A commitment to the rule of law, community empowerment and pro-poor work and appreciation of the complexity of the issues and the way issues relate to one another;
  • Principles and integrity in alignment with Protimos’ values;
  • A commitment to the organization and the Board;
  • A team player (able to work in a consensus decision-making environment);
  • High levels of fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Basic computer skills; and easy access to internet connectivity.

Candidates must be:
  • Highly ethical, leading in a manner that engenders respect and collegiality;
  • Naturally innovative with knowledge of global political, economic, legal and social trends and the willingness to listen to new ideas and approaches;
  • An engaged, compassionate leader with an approachable style that connects with members, staff, strategic partners and other stakeholders;
  • A people person, comfortable with visibility in large public settings and projecting a positive, welcoming demeanor.

Term of Office:
Board Members are appointed on a renewable 3-year term.

Time Commitment: 
This varies considerably throughout the year. Time requirements could also vary based on the internal developments and processes and on the geographical location of the Board Member. The workload is heaviest in the weeks leading up to Board meetings and the evaluation of the Executive Director. However, special circumstances such as an unforeseen internal crisis or the lead up to a major organizational event can add considerably to the time required for the job.

Board members are expected to be able to spend roughly 20 days per year on Protimos Africa business -- the Chairperson may spend up to three times that amount.

Financial Support:
This is a volunteer position, which does not offer remuneration. However, certain work- related expenses may be covered in accordance with the Protimos Africa Expenses Policy.

Support:
The Executive Director, based in Cape Town, prepares Board papers, drafts minutes and keeps track of Board decisions. No office is provided to the Chair or any Board Member and considerable self-sufficiency is required to keep abreast of emails and other documents, finalize agendas and minutes, monitor the governance budget, and provide regular written reports to the Board and to the organization.
