What we are doing


The project has three main components:


1.) Litigation

  1.   Negotiation.

  2.   Preparing a group of strategic test cases on behalf of the adversely affected

               communities.

  1.   Legal training of young lawyers on the project.

  2.   Building up a public interest law capacity in Lesotho.


2.) Community legal education

  1.   Conducting focussed workshops in selected communities on the legal issues

               affecting them, aiming to empower communities with the knowledge required to

               assert their environmental, cultural and economic rights.


3.) Setting a precedent

  1.   Setting an international precedent with regard to the appropriate treatment and

               compensation of communities affected by the LHWP and other major dams and        

               infrastructure projects.

  1.   Communicating the outcomes of the project to the international development

               community.

  1.   Encouraging best practice.

  2.   Building up a body of development lawyers.
